If you’re in the market for a new Android smartphone in Australia, until recently you’re generally going to reach for the latest Samsung.

In recent times the competition from other smartphone manufacturers has gotten much more appealing with the likes of HTC and Google Pixel models giving Samsung’s Galaxy S8 a run for its money.

We’re about to make your eye linger elsewhere with the introduction of the extremely appealing OnePlus 5T.

OnePlus is a relatively new company in the smartphone space having entered the market in a strong way only a few years ago with the OnePlus One in 2014. The latest offering, the OnePlus 5T builds upon the OnePlus 5, refining what was already an exceptional handset for features vs value for money.

Setting up the OnePlus 5T:

As soon as you open the box, the OnePlus 5T oozes a sleek sense of class and sophistication with an impressive screen size. Turn the phone on and you’re instantly greeted with a sharp, bright display and super fast operation.

In your hand, the OnePlus 5T feels solid yet well-proportioned. The only real downside if you are looking for downsides, is the rear surface of the phone which feels as though it may slip from your hand at any moment. This is seemingly acknowledged with the inclusion of a rubbery feel case in the box. While we’re talking about what’s in the box, the OnePlus 5T incorporates a 3.5mm headphone jack but you won’t find any earphones in the box, an exclusion we expect few people would be worried about.

As you work your way through the setup prompts, you’ll quickly discover some of the phone’s advanced features such as face recognition which wasn’t built into the OnePlus 5, and fingerprint security with its sensor conveniently built into the back of the phone for single-handed operation.

Also in the box is the OnePlus Dash Charger which is capable of charging the phone to approx 50% battery in as little as 20 minutes. This is just about as fast a charge as you’ll come across on the market today, which in our opinion makes up for being incompatible with wireless charging.

OnePlus 5T Specs:

There are two OnePlus 5T models, both only available in black except for a limited edition white model. There is the 6GB RAM/64GB storage model, and the 8GB RAM/128GB model.

In terms of speed performance, the 6GB RAM model is perfectly capable, although the 8GB RAM model slightly outperforms the market including the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Google Pixel 2 on the Geekbench 4 multi-core test. In terms of pure performance capability, the 8GB model is likely to outperform competitors models running only 4GB RAM when multiple apps and background tasks are all running concurrently.

Androids aside the only major phone on the market currently which outperforms the OnePlus 5T on the same Geekbench 4 test is the iPhone X which scored stronger results by around 30%.

When you’re looking at value for money however, the OnePlus 5T scores extremely well when you consider it is less than half the price of an iPhone X (6GB model).

Here are the OnePlus 5T specs (see bottom of page for full specs):

  • Android Nougat 7.1.1
  • 5.5in 2160 1080p Full HD AMOLED display, 401ppi
  • 2.45GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor
  • 6/8GB RAM
  • 64/128GB storage
  • 16Mp and 20Mp rear cameras, f/1.7, support for 4K video at 30fps
  • 16Mp front camera, f/2.0
  • Bluetooth 5.0

OnePlus 5T Design:

The design of the OnePlus 5T is somewhat minimalist. The handset measures 156 x 75 x 7.3mm, accommodating a 6.01in Optic AMOLED 18:9 ratio display measuring 1080x2160px. This places the phone in the territory of potentially sticking out of your pants pocket, but it still feels comfortable to use in your hand, even though you may struggle to reach your thumb to every corner of the large screen.

On the back of the phone you’ll find the newly located and perfectly positioned fingerprint sensor as well as the dual lens camera.

OnePlus 5T Camera:

The best thing about the OnePlus 5T’s camera is its ability in low light. The 16Mp and 20Mp rear sensors work at f1.7 aperture which surpasses the iPhone X’s 12Mp f1.8 (wide-angle) and f2.4 (telephoto) sensors.

The portrait mode, although a bit fiddly, is also a nice inclusion. In our test with ‘Percy’ the Cashrewards pig you can see the depth effect on the background pig which appears more out of focus with portrait mode enabled.

Overall, the OnePlus 5T incorporates a well-built and well-performing camera which stacks up to its competitors, at a much lower price point.

OnePlus 5T Features:

An upgrade from the previous model, the OnePlus 5T now incorporates a face unlock feature which functions super fast. In our tests, I struggled to realise it was actually functioning because it works so quickly, until the phone was pointed away from my face and it did not unlock. Similarly to the Samsung Galaxy S8 though, the OnePlus 5T has yet to match the superior 3D mapping of Apple’s face unlock feature and is therefore less secure and potentially able to be circumvented. But hey, if you want the Apple 3D face-mapping technology, you’d better be prepared to pay for it.

Another alternative to the face unlock feature is fingerprint unlock, neatly located on the back of the phone within easy reach of your index finger.

You’ll find a dual-SIM slot which has become standard for OnePlus, a great feature to have if you juggle a single handset for separate work and personal calls, or if you’re travelling overseas and want to use a local SIM in another country.

The OnePlus 5T does not offer expandable storage which may be an issue for some users, but it does offer 64/128GB models in comparison to the Samsung Galaxy S8 which only offers a 64GB built-in memory option, although it is expandable with a MicroSD up to 256GB.

The OnePlus 5T is a quality, easy-to-use handset that’s also super fast. If you want all the bells and whistles of a highly customised operating system out of the box, then other Android models are most likely for you. The OnePlus 5T incorporates everything you’ll need and more, wrapped up in a clean and sophisticated body and UI, with quality components and a price point you’ll love.
