You don’t need to go to New Zealand or to California’s Napa Valley to indulge in one of the oldest drinks (next to beer) around – WINE!

No matter if you’re a red or white wine drinker, sparkling or rosè there is a vineyard out there for you. These are the top wine regions in Australia along with a breakdown of the best varieties of wines they produce.

South Burnett:  This region is located 200 km north west of Brisbane and is popular for its shiraz, verdelho and sangiovesse. This region is relatively new and is home to over a dozen wineries and cellar doors. It has seen rapid growth in the last decade as the wines have gained acclaimed attention.  Take a tour of Clovely Estate, Dusty Hill and Tabinga Station.

New South Wales

The Hunter Valley: Famous for its semillon, chardonnay and shiraz, this region needs no introduction to any wine lover. This is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions that includes wineries such as Tempus Two, De Bortoli Wines and Tyrrell’s Wines to name a few.  If you’re in Sydney it’s great for a day trip as it’s only a 2.5-hour drive, however with a host of great hotels why would you want to go home and not spend the night or two?

Riverina: The Riverina is situated in south-central New South Wales and is the largest wine producing region in the state with the town of Griffith at its heart, however, the region spans a large area so there are plenty of wineries to choose from including McWilliam’s, De Bortoli and Lillypilly Estate.

The favourite of this area is the botrytis semillon with the region boasting over a dozen different types of this particular wine.  The Riverina whilst having other unique varieties of wines is focused on maintaining its reputation as one of the world’s best dessert wine regions.

Rutherglen: Less known than the Yarra Valley, Rutherglen is located in North East Victoria just 10 km’s away from the Murray River.  The region is the smaller of the two and has 19 wineries. This is the perfect escape for a weekend getaway to a small town with so many things to do including fishing and cycling or you can take it easy and enjoy the winery tours. They are renowned for fortified wines, aromatic whites and bold reds.

Yarra Valley: About an hour away from Melbourne, the Yarra Valley offers exceptional food, scenery and accommodation for the romantics or the adventurous, with a range of activities other than wine tasting it caters for all.  Boasting 300 vineyards and 160 wineries this is truly a wine lovers heaven. The region’s most popular wines are sparkling chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and pinot noir. There are so many options to eat, stay and play in the Yarra that your weekend could easily turn into a week.

South Australia

Barossa Valley: Only an hour away from Adelaide the Barossa has 150 wineries and 80 cellar doors with plenty of varieties to sample. The region is made up of the Barossa and Eden Valleys, that makes it the only region in Australia to have both warm and cool climate growing conditions.  However, the region is renowned for its shiraz, chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon.

Coonawarra: Located on the Limestone Coast that borders Victoria, Coonawarra is only 20 km in length and 2 km in diameter making it a small area compared to other wine regions in Australia.  This region prides itself and is best known for its cabernet sauvignon as well as its shiraz. Although small, don’t let the size fool you, there are 28 wineries to choose from as well as plenty of dining options.
